Contour Energy Systems is developing advanced primary lithium carbon fluoride battery systems in coin cell, cylindrical, thin film and prismatic form factors.
Each of these batteries offers up to 8 times the performance versus similar sized lithium cells. These new advanced primary batteries extend operational temperature ranges from as low as -60°C up to and exceeding 160°C. This is a significant improvement at both the high and low ends of the operating temperature spectrum compared to competing lithium systems.
Contour's carbon fluoride chemistry system has double the shelf-life of manganese-based lithium systems. Plus, there is no performance degradation when systems are employed at temperatures exceeding 60°C.
Unlike liquid lithium systems, such as lithium sulfur dioxide and lithium thionyl chloride, Contour's carbon fluoride batteries operate at a lower pressure rating and do not use toxic electrolyte systems that can cause severe damage in case of unexpected venting or leakage.
Contour's advanced primary systems overcome two key performance shortcomings found in legacy carbon monofluoride batteries: limited power capabilities and limited low temperature operation. The company's proprietary process introduces fluorine into the carbon material to provide a fundamentally different atomic structure than traditional carbon monofluoride materials. This new structure, coupled with the use of new nano-materials, retains all the favorable aspects of traditional primary LiCFx batteries while providing best-in-class power density and low temperature performance.
